Interview: Kalpana Murthy
Trauma is a topic I hear mentioned more and more in popular culture, as our society is becoming more aware of it. However, most of us don’t know what trauma is, how to know if we’ve experienced it, or how to find hope and healing if we have.
I also hear people talking about EMDR (a type of therapy), but what is it? And how does it work?
I am so excited to have Kalpana Murthy on the podcast to teach us about it. She’s a therapist who specializes in treating trauma and using EMDR therapy, and she has so much insight to share.
Kalpana is a Licensed Professional Counselor and an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Psychotherapist in private practice in Atlanta, GA. She helps adults overcome the negative effects that stressful or traumatic life experiences have on how a person thinks, feels and behaves. She specializes in upsetting events, trauma recovery, early relational trauma, adult children of narcissistic parents, and self-esteem matters.
Kalpana has advanced training in trauma therapy and EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR Therapy is an evidenced-based approach to psychotherapy and performance enhancement based on the science of how the brain stores and processes information related to upsetting life experiences including criticism, rejection, humiliation, job loss, relationship endings, emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse and major traumatic events.
Kalpana is also a career coach, and her career coaching experience includes work at the Duke University MBA Career Management Center, Emory University MBA Career Management Center and at Right Management, a global human resources firm. At Right Management, she coached managers and executives on how to navigate all aspects of career transition and job search. Kalpana earned a Masters of Science in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University, a MBA from Duke University, and a BA in Business from Vanderbilt University. She completed her Masters’ counseling program nine month internship and practicum working as a counselor at the Georgia Institute of Technology Counseling Center and The Anxiety and Stress Management Institute.
This is a rich interview, full of knowledge, important information, human connection and hope. I hope you enjoy sitting with Kalpana as much as I did.
